27th Annual Women Race

The 27th Annual Women Race was held on Sunday, June 12, 2011, in historic Christiansted. Over 175 participants ran, jogged or walked the 2-mile course through town. The excitement of celebrating the WCSC’s 30th anniversary added to the festive air for runners, walkers and spectators of the race.

Ninfa Barnard of the St. Croix Track Club (SCTC), a sophomore at the University of Arkansas, Pine Bluff, successfully defended her title in the Women Race. She was the first to the finish line with a time of 12 minutes, 31 seconds, followed by nine-year-old fellow SCTC member Mikaela Smith at 12 minutes, 47 seconds. Mikaela’s mother, Mireille, also of SCTC, came in third place, with a time of 12 minutes, 53 seconds. Mireille was followed by Julie Somer at 13 minutes, 4 seconds for fourth place and another SCTC member, Stephanie Mathew, finished fifth with a time of 13 minutes, 5 seconds.

Participants received overall and age-group category awards, including a special category added this year to honor WCSC’s anniversary celebration, the mother/daughter team award, which was won by Mireille and Mikaela Smith of SCTC.

The Women Race is organized by the Virgin Islands Pace Runners and sanctioned by the Virgin Islands Track and Field Federation and supported by volunteers and staff of WCSC. A very special thank you to all!
